Published: Friday, February 15, 2008 Two minor fires were reported in the Living Learning Center on Thursday night. No fire-related injuries were reported.
At 8:45 p.m. a female UVM student noticed smoke coming out of a trash room in Living Learning "C" building. Using a fire extinguisher, the student put out the fire, which did not trigger either the alarm or the sprinkler system. The student suffered a minor cut to her hand while breaking glass to remove the fire extinguisher and was treated.
Shortly after, a second fire broke out in a recycling room in Living Learning "E" building. This fire set off the fire alarm and sprinkler system. The sprinkler system extinguished the fire but also caused water damage in the recycling room and in the hallway outside the room.
Students were evacuated from "E" building for approximately 90 minutes. By 10:45 the fire department has released the building to UVM and students were expected to re-enter.
Both incidents are under investigation by UVM Police Services. Police and fire officials believe that both fires were set. Burlington Free Press
