On Friday evening July 23rd at approximately 6:30 PM, Units from
the Burlington Fire Department responded to a call for a man down at
132 North Avenue which is Fire Station 2. The call was for 23 year
veteran Burlington Fire Lieutenant, Steven N. Costello , age 46, The
on duty Lieutenant was found by the members of his fire crew in
cardiac arrest. Those members of Engine 2 and Rescue 2 preformed
CPR, Advanced Life Support interventions and transported the
Lieutenant Costello to Fletcher Allen Health Care Emergency
Department. In the Emergency Department, Lieutenant Costello
regained his pulse and after further medical interventions, was
admitted to the Intensive Care Unit where his condition was listed as
critical.
On Friday morning July 30 2010, Lieutenant Steven N. Costello
succumbed to complications from cardiac arrest, in spite of the valiant
efforts of Steve, his family and his medical team. The family wishes
to express their heartfelt appreciation for the care given to Steve over
the past week by his family, brother/sister firefighters, and Fletcher
Allen Health Care nurses and doctors.
Funeral arrangements remain incomplete at this time. Updates on the
arrangements will be provided as the information becomes available
through the Burlington Fire Department and Local 3044 IAFF.
