What's New at BFFA 3044
Burlington Firefighters Union will not back a candidate in the Burlington Mayors race.
On Tuesday, February 7, 2012 the Burlington Firefighters Association, International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 3044 held a Mayoral forum. The purpose of this event was to allow firefighters that work in Burlington's firehouses to meet with and talk to the candidates for mayor. About half of the City's firefighters were in attendance. Miro Wienberger, Kurt Wright and Wanda Hines all met separately with the Union. The candidates fielded questions from the membership ranging from the City Pension System, station consolidation, cuts to fire department staffing levels, and development in Burlington. Local 3044 President Derek Libby thanked all of the candidates for their time and participation in this important process. After great discussion, the Unions membership voted not to endorse a candidate in this years mayors race. The BFFA membership didn't believe that there was one single candidate that was strong on our issues. The Burlington Firefighters Association makes endorsements based on fire service and labor issues that directly affect its membership and their ability to service the citizens of Burlington.

3rd alarm on No. Champlain St.

At 5:02 AM, the Burlington Fire Department responded to structure fire at 142 North Champlain Street in Burlington's Old North End. First arriving units from Station 2 found fire venting from the first floor windows.  They attacked the fire while other units from Central Station and Station 3 searched the building for occupants. A second alarm was transmitted at 5:07 AM, bringing all of Burlington's on-duty firefighters and apparatus to the scene and initiating a recall of twenty off-duty firefighters.

Although the firefighters did not know it at first, all four of the occupants of the two apartments made it out of the fire prior to their arrival.  Two of the  occupants were later transported by ambulance to Fletcher Allen for treatment of smoke inhalation.  The others were not injured.

At 5:36 AM, a third alarm was struck, with a full recall of all off-duty firefighters.  At 5:47 AM, and additional engine company from the South Burlington Fire Department was called to the scene.  In all, approximately 60 firefighters fought the fire, and brought the visible fire under control by 6:15 AM.

Most of the firefighters remained on scene conducting a labor - intensive effort to extinguish the fires hidden within the walls and ceilings until approximately  8:20 AM.  The last engine company cleared the scene at 12:20 PM.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Burlington Fire Marshal's Office.
